AFP joins FactCheckEU, a new collaborative project to fight disinformation ahead of the european elections
After joining partnerships to debunk fake news and disinformation during elections in France, Brazil and Nigeria, AFP is now joining a verification project with 18 other fact-checking outlets in the run-up to the European Parliamentary elections in May.
FactCheckEu has been launched by the International Fact-Checking Network and is available in 10 languages.
Fact-checks that appear on the AFP Fact-Check site will be pubished by FactCheckEU. It will include fact-checks on possible disinformation being spread in the EU, will verify statements by politicians, and will also answer questions sent by readers in a Q&A section.
FactCheckEU will also look at how disinformation spreads from country to country within the EU and who is behind it.
AFP already partnered in the First Draft initiatives CrossCheck for the 2017 French presidential election, the CrossCheck partnership for the 2018 Nigerian elections and the Comprova fact-checking project for the 2018 Brazilian presidential election.
AFP has developed fact-checking programmes in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Arabic in 19 countries – South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Cameroon, Colombia, Spain, France, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Senegal and Sri Lanka.

FactCheckEU has 19 media partners from 13 European countries in 10 languages. All partners have signed the International Fact-Checking Network’s code of conduct which has 12 criteria covering transparency, ethics, methodology and impartiliaty. FactCheckEU is independent of EU institutions and governments. The platform was built by Libération and Datagif thanks to a grant from the International Fact-Checking Network, which is part of the Poynter Institute.
