Amanuel Sileshi honoured by the East African Photography Award

Photojournalist Amanuel Sileshi, based in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia, has been rewarded for the fifth edition of East African Photography Award (EAPA) in the Story category for his photo series “Searching for Peace Amidst Chaos”.

The annual East African Photography Award (EAPA) is open to citizens from Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. Its objective is to give visibility to local documentaries made by local photographers.

“Searching for Peace Amidst Chaos” tells the story of the civil war raging since 2020 in Northern Ethiopia between Tigrayan rebels and the central government of Ethiopia with its Eritrean allies. Despite crime accusations on both sides, this conflict has been poorly covered on a global scale due to local restrictions for journalists. Through his photographs, Amanuel Sileshi relays people's pain as they are trapped between two armies.

Sileshi is a member of the African Photojournalism Database, a directory of emerging and professional African visual journalists established by the World Press Photo Foundation and Everyday Africa. He participated in the 2021 edition of the Canon Student Development Programme, a bespoke education programme dedicated solely to students with a clear commitment to photography, with a focus on visual storytelling.
