AFP wins a Covering Climate Now Award

An AFP team has won a Covering Climate Now award for the video story “Coastal Cities face their mortality on the climate "frontline" by Kelly MacnamaraRobin Simmonds, Antoine Demaison, Florence GoisnardSam JahanJan Hennop, Sonia Logre, Giovanna Girardi, and Rachel O’brien

The report, which was joint winner in the Video - Short Feature category, was described by judges as "journalism of the highest quality".

The story built off a scoop by AFP’s science specialists who obtained an early draft of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Sixth Assessment Report on climate impacts and adaptation.

The project mobilised VJs around the world - in Bangladesh, South Africa, Brazil, Italy and the Netherlands - while the final digital edit was put together by the cellule digitale. By focusing on coastal cities, our reporting sought to show the human impacts of rising seas and the unequal risks faced by communities.

“The coverage displays concise command of the science, vast historical sweep, strong emphasis on climate justice, and an eye for solutions, such as Rotterdam’s extensive measures to cope with rising seas. The visuals are superb and memorable,” said the judging panel.

The video was one of only 23 winners across text, video, audio, and photo, from a field of 900 entries submitted from 65 countries. The awards were set up in 2021 to celebrate the best in climate journalism.
