AFP awarded at the Human Rights Press Awards 2024
AFP’s exceptional series of photographs of women fighting Myanmar’s junta on the frontlines has won the Photography category at the prestigious Human Rights Press Awards 2024.
AFP is one of the few remaining foreign media with a presence in Myanmar, a sign of the agency’s continued commitment to reporting from every corner in the globe, even under the most difficult circumstances. The agency filed a series of powerful multimedia reportages from Myanmar over the last year, documenting the fighting between the military junta and armed rebels, and its impact on the lives of ordinary people.
The HRPA 2024 winners and runners-up were announced to mark World Press Freedom Day on May 3. The seven categories of awards are administered by Human Rights Watch, the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, and the foreign correspondents’ clubs in both Thailand and Taiwan.
AFP has also been announced as a finalist in two categories at the Society of Publishers in Asia’s (SOPA) 2024 Awards: for Excellence in Reporting Breaking News for the agency’s coverage of thousands of Afghans who fled Pakistan fearing deportation; and for Excellence in Photography for coverage of desperate Rohingya refugees seeking safety in Indonesia. The winners of the SOPA Awards will be announced at a ceremony in Hong Kong on June 20.
